The Collaborative Design of Ancient Hive Cities

  1. The "Collaborative Design of Ancient Hive Cities" reminds me of some of the ideas that I previously explored pertaining to the evolution of the civilization of the Iberian Peninsula. The modern cities relate back to historical defensive outposts/highground, and many of the inter-city routes were historic shepherd paths, as they guided their flock from pasture to market. The layout and to a certain extent, master planning, of these modern streets and cities were all based on the utilitarian and strategic nature of the local terrain. Architecture grew out of necessity, sans architect.

  2. Really interesting comment, Paul. Glad you took a look at this article! I wonder though - in light of these historic cities, and in today's world of professionalized architects, how can the role of the architect be re-thought?
